With everyone looking for ways to cut cost these days, you’ve probably noticed that one of the most expensive items on your grocery list is laundry detergent. This is the recipe for the home made laundry detergent that my family has been using for years. Here’s how to make your own from 3 simple inexpensive ingredients (plus water).

Small stainless steel pot or large sauce pan
Long handle spoon
5 gallon plastic bucket
Cheese grater
6 Cups of water
4 cups of Water
20 Cups of water
(Yes, that adds up to 30 cups of water, but you will need it in the specific quantities above for different steps in the preparation)
½ Cup of Borax
½ Cup Washing Soda
1/3 of a bar of Fels Naptha grated
Note: If you have inexpensive access to Castile Soap, consider using half Fels Naptha and half Castile Soap. I use 1oz of each per batch. It will change the consistence of the finished product from a gel to a thick liquid but it does not change the cleaning ability of the solution.

Preparation:
I suggest getting all of your ingredients pre measured and ready before you start preparing the detergent, including at least the first 2 quantities of water.

1.Place 6 cups of water in the stock pot with the grated soap and heat until melted (Do not Boil)

2. Once all of the soap is dissolved into the water, add the borax and Washing Soda into the stock pot and stir until everything is dissolved.

3. Put 4 cups of water into the 5 gallon bucket

4. Add the soap mixture to the bucket and stir.

5. Add an additional 20 cups of water to the mixture in the bucket and stir well.

6. Allow mixture to cool for 12-24 hours.

 Using in your washer:

**High Efficiency Washers** Although I personally know of someone that uses this recipe in her HE Washer, I personally do not have one and cannot say from experience that it is safe. It is however very low suds. So proceed with caution.

Use ½ a cup of detergent for a normal load of laundry. You might want to use a little more for larger or heavily soiled loads.
